I haven't tried it, but I'd guess that the main issue is to get the
BIOS (either system or PCI card) to present the drive to the system as
a boot drive.

When you say "the system", do you mean the motherboard BIOS or
FreeBSD? If it's the latter, what drive name does the IDE-connected
drive get?
