That's part of the problem, yes. Another is probably the recording
industry doing its damndest to make it difficult for people to find
out how the existing equipment works.

Something that Yvonne can run when I'm not there: record TV
programmes, play them back, play DVDs (preferably the same thing).
I'm currently working around with mplayer and a DVD recorder, but it's
a mess.

Correct. Currently I can't do it because I don't know the correct
settings for the tuner card.

Ultimately I need flexibility. At the moment I need something which
Just Works.

Maybe I should, and then throw it away later. But I'd like something
that supplies the basics now and on which I can work.

Heh. I actually did that a year ago. Got the card back, but it was
indirect (looks at Ryan), and I never got the info I needed.
