I'm moving the BUGA mailing list, currently buga@lemis.com, to the
AUUG mail server.  In future, the mailing list will be
buga@auug.org.au.  You don't need to do anything special.  You'll be
automatically subscribed to the new list.

There were a couple of reasons for this change:

1.  My system is on a dialup modem.  When messages come in, they block
    the modem for several minutes at a time.
2.  majordomoo@lemis.com has become a major spam target.  I can't
    refuse to reply, and when I do, it just generates more spam.  I
    can't move to mailman or some other web-based system because I
    block port 80 on my network.
3.  AUUG (not just myself :-) is happy to host the list.

buga@lemis.com will continue to work for the foreseeable future; it
will just forward the message to buga@auug.org.au.

In relationship to port 80: yes, we have a couple of web servers here.
But the entire class C network is being bombarded with one to two
connection attempts per second.  Here's the output of my (Linux)
firewall:

FreeBSD driver for the satellite receiver card I'm using.

Hi all, 

Has anyone installed FreeBSD 4.8 or 5.0 onto a promise onboard IDE/RAID 
drive? Any gotchas? Which model of promise chip was being used? (20265, 
20269, 20276) Are the offboard cards substantially better in any way?

Hello All

Just a small inquiry. Does anyone know if the Dynalink RTA-100 adsl modem is
compatible with Linux & FreeBSD? This modem has a built in router setup for
internet sharing. Do you see any problems with a heterogeneous network using
this as the gateway to the internet, apart from the issue of security?

If it's one of those black box things that don't need to communicate
with the OS at all (except for a browser setup utility) then there
should be no problems.

Hi all,

If I want to change the block size and fragment size of a BSD partition will newfs use the
changed values I make in the disklabel or do I still have to use newfs options to specify the
fsize and bsize ?

In other words, by changing the values of the disklabel, does this make the new values the defaultfor newfs ?

This doesn't appear to match the command you mention above.

The thing here is that end-of-medium handling on modern tapes is just
plain broken, so dump makes assumptions about how long the tape is.
They're based on much older tapes.  You have a number of options here.
=46rom dump(8):

     -a      ``auto-size''.  Bypass all tape length considerations, and
             enforce writing until an end-of-media indication is returned.
             This fits best for most modern tape drives.  Use of this option
             is particularly recommended when appending to an existing tape,
             or using a tape drive with hardware compression (where you can
             never be sure about the compression ratio).

     -B records
             The number of kilobytes per output volume, except that if it is
             not an integer multiple of the output block size, the command
             uses the next smaller such multiple.  This option overrides the
             calculation of tape size based on length and density.

     -d density
             Set tape density to density.  The default is 1600BPI.

Note that default.

     -s feet
             Attempt to calculate the amount of tape needed at a particular
             density.  If this amount is exceeded, dump prompts for a new
             tape.  It is recommended to be a bit conservative on this opti=
on.
             The default tape length is 2300 feet.

These parameters are correct for the tapes used on VAXen 20 years
ago.  They give you a default capacity per tape of 46 MB, unless they
also make assumptions about tape gaps.

Yes, that's reasonable, since you've used the -b 512 option.  Again,
from the man page:

     -b blocksize
             The number of kilobytes per output block, except that if it is
             larger than 64, the command uses 64. (See the BUGS section.)  =
The
             default block size is 10.

BUGS

     Currently, physio(9) slices all requests into chunks of 64 KB.  There-
     fore, it is impossible to use a larger output block size, so dump will
     prevent this from happening.

This bug is in fact incorrect; physio(9) now does 128 kB.  Anyway, you
need to specify -b 64 to restore as well.

As others have observed, though, there are better choices.  On tape I
use tar, because the format is more portable.

I have a slight problem with running sudo over an rsh connection.
If I rsh to a box and pass to it the sudo command my password gets echo'ed to stdout.

eg

# rsh host sudo ls /
Password:thepassword

It seems that this is a terminal handling problem.

If I run:

# rsh host xterm -e sudo ls /

an exterm starts up and I can type my password in without it being echo'ed to stdout.

The xterm then sits in the background.

I have tryed using subshells and couldn't suss it out.

Can anyone recommend a way so that the terminal does *not* echo my password when sudo prompts
for it.

It's probably dependent on the TERM environment variable that the rshd
sees.

How about using ssh instead of rsh?  rsh is borderline obsolete.

Why do you want to run rsh in the first place?  It's more secure to use
ssh with a shared key.

The reason your password is echoed is that the remote socket is not a
terminal device and so termio, which is used to turn echo on or off,
is not available.

Good question.  It's not entirely clear from the newfs(8) and
disklabel(8) man pages exactly what happens.

Turning to the source code we see:

in /usr/src/sbin/newfs.c:

This is probably because the remote command doesn't have a tty, so it
can't do things like disable echo.

I can't see an option for rsh that fixes this - if you use ssh instead,
the -t option will do exactly what you want. You can set up ssh to
behave like rsh and use the .rhosts file for authentication (although
this isn't the default).

Unless you're on a completely isolated network, ssh might be a good idea
regardless.

Buga,

Ive always had this problem with FreeBSD 5 and have fixed it in the past but
for the life of me, cant work it out this time around.  Normally, only kiddies
in the wheel group can actually run su.  With Freebie 5, anyone can do it,
aslong as they know the password.  Ive followed the instructions in
/etc/pam.d/su but that then breaks all su'ing to root for everyone, including
me :)

The server is at another campus so im not really in a position to break it, so
if anyone has any definate ideas, please let me know.

If you mean the FreeBSD handbook, I wouldn't rely on it for this sort
of thing.

Do you know how to set up kdm on Linux?  I would expect that it would
work the same way.  KDE is neither Linux nor FreeBSD.

FWIW, I just tried it on my laptop.  Ran kdm with no parameters.  It
came up with a login screen with a list of possible login IDs
(probably a bad idea from a security point of view).  I entered my
login and password, and it started KDE for me.  I've never used kdm
before, though I have used KDE.  It seems it doesn't need much in the
way of configuration.

Yes...depending on which Linux you happen to be using. It tends to
startup under the SysV runlevel system.

Hmm, yes, it doesn't seem to take any parameters, and it gets handed
some by init.  There's no man page or other docco, and It's also too
stupid to check if the process in the pid file is still running. =20

Well, as a last resort you could start it in /etc/rc.local.  I'd
suggest something like this:

  killall kdm
  rm -f /var/run/kdm.pid
  kdm &

Doesn't seem to be an equivalent per se, although it looks like you could
achieve the same result using the login_prompt setting of login.conf(5).
I haven't actually tried fiddling with the setting, but it looks like it
can be used to do what you want.

No, Linux already has /etc/motd.  /etc/issue is displayed before the login
prompt, whereas /etc/motd is displayed after a successful login but before

Umm, not that I've tried it, but /etc/issue ShouldJustWork(tm).

$ man telnetd

...

NOTES
     By default telnetd will read the he, hn, and im capabilities from
     /etc/gettytab and use that information (if present) to determine what to
     display before the login: prompt. You can also use a System V style
     /etc/issue file by using the if capability, which will override im.  The
     information specified in either im or if will be displayed to both con-
     sole and remote logins.

$ cat /etc/gettytab

...

default:\
        :cb:ce:ck:lc:fd#1000:im=\r\n%s/%m (%h) (%t)\r\n\r\n:sp#1200:\
        :if=/etc/issue:

The default banner is the "im" attribute, and a file is the "if" attribute.  The default is /etc/issue.

mmm, doesn't seem to work. I've created an /etc/issue file and nothing gets displayed.

Do I have to HUP anything for this to work ?

According to the gettytab man page issue is supported and the default gettytab 
has it enabled, but it doesn't appear to work :(

I use kdm from /etc/init..
ttyv8   "/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon"  xterm   on  secure

Works fine.

BTW Greg, you can disable the list of users thing :)

You're right of course :).  I was expecting an issue(5) and missed the
setting when I skimmed gettytab(5).

Its working for me:

# ls -l /etc/issue
-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  19 May 12 23:43 /etc/issue
# cat /etc/issue 
Testing /etc/issue
# killall -9 getty

If I then switch to a virtual console "Testing /etc/issue" is being
displayed before the system identification and login prompt.

That's how my xdm was run, so I just copied it. Makes sense if you realise 
that init will just keep restarting 'exiting'(ie backgrounding) kdm 
processes.

The list of users kdm shows when it starts, to give you one to choose to login 
as.

You are correct.  The code to do this was clobbered in rev. 1.30.  The
manual page wasn't updated though, which leads me to believe that
maybe this clobbering was accidental?  Please try the attached patch 
(against 4.8).

The concept is fine.  But why should kdm use the same options as xdm?
One reason might be that it's a modified version, of course, but the
correct answer should be "because it's in the man page".  But kdm
doesn't have a man page (or at least it doesn't get installed), and
running it with --help gives nothing useful.

Most of the KDE applications are like this. There's no sensible
documentation around and what's in the KDE handbooks (i.e. the help
you get when using the "Help" menu) isn't too useful to expert users or
even semi-expert users.

Besides which, how does one read the KDE handbook when KDE won't run?

FYI.  ADUUG is what remained of the AUUG SA chapter when it folded
some years ago.  Mark arranges a lunch once a month, and we normally
